Goldman Sachs has hired Justin Schmidt as vice president and head of digital asset markets to help the investment bank explore cryptocurrencies, finance industry website Tearsheet reported Monday. In a statement, Goldman said it has no plans to open a cryptocurrency trading desk. The move to hire a crypto trader is its response to client interest in various digital products, Goldman spokesperson Tiffany Galvin said in a statement Friday. She added that the company has not yet decided on the scope of its digital offerings. Up until now, Goldman has facilitated client purchases of bitcoin (BTC) futures through CBOE Global Markets and CME Group exchanges, but it is not a cryptocurrency market maker nor is it active on any crypto exchanges, Tearsheet reports.
