The news is filled with reports of Russian meddling in the U.S. elections of 2016 through all sorts of electronic means. Now, Russia’s Ministry of Defense is reportedly creating a research lab to look into ways of using blockchain to identify cyberattacks on important databases and protect the nation’s infrastructure.

Let that sink in.

According to Coindesk, quoting Izvestia, the research is underway to explore possible applications for blockchain technology, even though the actual lab is still being developed. Russia has even formed a team of information security specialists, according to Izvestia.

Why blockchain? According to the report, online intruders often clean up access logs on devices to hide traces of unauthorized access to the device. Using blockchain, that’s not so easy to do. Read more here.
