Major League Baseball is hoping blockchain will bring more fans to the ballpark and maybe even inspire them to watch the Summer Game.

Blockchain gaming company Lucid Sight has signed a licensing deal with Major League Baseball to launch digital collectibles on the Ethereum blockchain this summer.

That’s right, collectibles, as in CryptoKitties, which has had $25 million in sales since launching in November.

The MLB Crypto Baseball dapp allows users to buy and trade unique digital avatars tied to moments in recent games using ether (ETH), Yahoo! Finance reports. Users can also earn rewards and stickers.

“We’re in the business of delivering baseball to fans. So this game is a more interesting intersection of blockchain technology and what we do,” Kenny Gersh, MLB’s executive vice president of gaming and new business ventures, said of the dapp.

Will it counter the recent sharp drop in attendance at the ballpark or strike out? Stay tuned. Read more here.
