After a year of testing, IBM and Maersk have unveiled their blockchain-based platform, TradeLens, designed to track critical data about each shipment in a supply chain in real time.

According to the joint press release, 94 organizations are “actively involved or have agreed to participate on the TradeLens platform built on open standards” including more than 20 port and terminal operators across the globe.

Using IBM’s blockchain technology as a foundation, more than 154 million shipping events have been captured on the platform, including such data as vessel arrival times, customs releases, commercial invoices and bills of lading, all of which are essential in global trade, according to the companies.
