China’s internet giant Alibaba has 90 patent applications focused on blockchain-related technologies, making it the world leader, according to a survey by Chinese publication iPR Daily.

American companies came in second, third and fourth: IBM with 89 patent filings, MasterCard with 80 and Bank of America with 53.

iPR Daily said it consolidated information from patent databases as of Aug. 10 from China, the U.S., Europe, Japan and South Korea, as well as the International Patent System from the World Intellectual Property Organization.

According to CoinDesk, the People’s Bank of China was fifth on the list, one of the few central banks “to have moved into the blockchain industry with a total of 44 patent applications focused on its planned central bank digital currency.” China leads the world in blockchain patents, the Financial Times has found.
