Imagine an army of robots traversing the land, delivering packages from your favorite Walmart. Imagine them powered by a system made hack-proof by blockchain technology.

This sci-fi story may become reality if the retail giant’s patent application is approved. The patent, filed in January, is for a system that oversees the “in-field authenticating of autonomous robots.”

Walmart is very experienced when it comes to patents and blockchain. CCN reports that in this case the patent documents detail a system in which multiple robots handle the delivery of a package throughout different legs of the supply chain, using wireless signals to communicate and authenticate the identity of one another. Walmart wants to use blockchain to protect that supply chain from hackers.

Blockchain technology “may be utilized to record authentication signals and identification information to facilitate or resulting from in-field authentication between autonomous electronic devices,” according to the patent. Read more here.
