Fake news travels.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore has warned that a website was using “fabricated” comments from the head of its central bank to scam investors.

In a screenshot from the Gulf Weed Crab website accompanying the MAS statement, the headline reads: “Tharman Shanmugaratnam Invests $1 Billion for All Singapore Residents. Use HIS Method To Become Rich In Just 7 Days!”, the Straits Times reported.

Shanmugaratnam is chairman of the MAS and a deputy prime minister. The site claimed he backed a state-sponsored $1 billion investment in bitcoin (BTC).

Although Gulf Weed Crab is specifically mentioned by the MAS, another site called Positive Bath Hour also had the story, according to Cointelegraph. Both sites have since removed the item. Read more here.
