Even New Zealand is not beyond the reach of cryptocurrency fraudsters.

The local news site Stuff reported a cryptocurrency startup used fake news reports on Facebook to promote itself and even included the likeness of the island nation’s prime minister, Jacinda Ardern.

“The ads were targeted specifically at [New Zealanders] and pointed readers to a website dressed up to look like CNN, with a fake news story about the New Zealand Treasury supposedly investing half of its wealth in a bitcoin (BTC) startup, Stuff reported.

“Each ad was targeted at a different age group of New Zealanders, with captions like “Every Kiwi age between 30 and 45 must NOT miss this” and a picture of Ardern with money or United States President Donald Trump.”

Once Stuff made the PM aware of the posts, she complained to Facebook. Facebook then took the ads down. Read more here.
