Modern Terminals, the second-largest container terminal operator in Hong Kong, has joined the TradeLens blockchain project developed by Maersk and IBM.

“Over the last several years Modern Terminals has made significant investments in information technology and port infrastructure to be able to provide customers with state-of-the-art port services,” the company said in a press release. “Participation in TradeLens, and the future use of blockchain to streamline and secure supply chain documentation is an important part of the company’s direction.”

Since the project began in August, nearly 100 container terminals and port operators, including the Port of Montreal, have signed on to it. TradeLens faces competition from a number of places, including a blockchain project called the Global Shipping Business Network that will be developed by nine ocean carriers and terminal operators.
