Now you can call him Doctor Vitalik Buterin.
On Friday, the co-creator of Ethereum received an honorary degree from the University of Basel. The Swiss university’s Faculty of Business and Economics honored Buterin for his work on blockchain development at its annual celebration of its founding in 1460.
In a tweeted announcement, the university called Buterin an “exceptionally creative and innovative thinker who has been instrumental in shaping the digital revolution from an early age.” The statement continued: “He has made outstanding achievements in the fields of cryptocurrencies, smart contracts and the design of institutions.”
Switzerland has become a hotbed of blockchain research with several hundred projects in Zug, which lies a little over an hour to the southeast of Basel.
The honor comes as Ethereum works on a much-publicized upgrade to its system.
